History


1841 — La Porte Medical College is formed by Dr. Jacob Andrew, Dr. Franklin Hunt, Dr. G.A. Rose and Dr. Daniel Meeker.

1846 — La Porte Medical College changes its name to Indiana Medical College.

1851 — Indiana Medical College is consolidated with Indiana Central Medical College, a department of Asbury University (which later became DePauw University), at Greencastle, Indiana.

1900 — Five Sisters of the Order of Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ start Holy Family Hospital.

1914 — Holy Family Hospital builds a new, brick facility.

1924 — The La Porte County Protestant Association is established to support and manage an institution that will offer “medical and surgical aid and nursing to sick and disabled persons of every creed, nationality and color.”

1925 — A new addition is completed, giving Holy Family Hospital space for a total of 90 beds.

1926 - 1927 — The La Porte County Protestant Association purchases a building on Pine Lake Avenue and opens it as Fairview Hospital, with the capacity to care for 33 patients.

1943 — Fairview Hospital completes construction on a new 71-bed facility.

1960 — Fairview Hospital changes its name to Community Hospital.

1966 — A joint resolution is adopted for the merger of Holy Family and Community Hospitals, with the assets, direction and control of the two entities managed by La Porte Hospital, Inc.

1967 — Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Company donates 6.44 acres in downtown La Porte for the site of a new hospital.

1969 — 400 people gather for the groundbreaking ceremonies for the new facility.

1972 — La Porte Hospital opens a 213-bed, all private-room facility, the first hospital in the country to offer all private rooms.

1978 — The Health Care Foundation of Greater La Porte is formed, later known as the La Porte Hospital Foundation.

1983 — La Porte Hospital’s new parent organization, Lakeland Health Corporation, is formed.

1983 — Dedication ceremonies are held for the hospital’s South Pavilion addition.

1989 — The La Porte area welcomes the opening of Heritage Place, a new La Porte Hospital medical and office complex.

1993 — La Porte Hospital Community Health Center opens, offering health care to the indigent population.

1996 — La Porte Hospital becomes the first hospital in the country to use automated fingerprint technology to register patients.

1996 — Hospital officials announce plans for a three-year, $16 million renovation of the hospital.

1997 — La Porte Hospital officials announce the upcoming affiliation with Clarian Health Partners.

1998 — La Porte Hospital is officially integrated with Clarian Health Partners.

1998 — La Porte Regional Health System is formed to manage the operation and coordination of La Porte Hospital and Health Services, La Porte Regional Physician Network, and the La Porte Hospital Foundation.

1998 — Washington Street Center is completed, offering magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and comprehensive radiation oncology services.

1998 — Dedication ceremonies are held for the La Porte Hospital Family Chapel.

1999 — La Porte Hospital and Health Services named one of the nation’s Top 50 Hospitals in Geriatrics by U.S. News and World Report.

1999 — La Porte Hospital & Health Services and St. Anthony Memorial Health Centers partner to create the La Porte County Dental Services to serve low-income families.

1999 — La Porte Hospital & Health Services opens the Center for Cancer Therapy.

1999 — Leigh E. Morris retires after serving 21 years as president of La Porte Hospital.

1999 — Jonathan R. Goble is appointed new CEO and president of La Porte Regional Health System.

2000 — The Celebration of a Century. La Porte Hospital and Health Services commemorates 100 Year Celebration of Healthcare in La Porte during Hospital Week.

2000 — Members of La Porte Professional Building Partnership donate medical and professional office building located at 1300 State Street. The building, officially renamed as The Legacy Building, has a history that dates back to 1868, when it was built by the La Porte Sash and Door Company. Four years later, after a devastating fire swept through the building, August Backhaus and Louis Schumm rebuilt the structure. The last venture established there before the partnership purchased the building was Universal Woodcrafters, which went out of business in the early 1970’s.

2001 — Emergency Department—Setting the Pace, Setting the Standard. La Porte Hospital and Health Services opens new 5,000 square foot patient-friendly emergency department with full service heliport and and 55 dedicated parking spaces.

2001 — New Lung Center gives community the opportunity to breathe easy. Officially opened on June 13 and spearheaded by La Porte pulmonologist Thomas Calvin, M.D., the new Lung Center was established in response to community need. Research conducted within La Porte County indicated an unusually high incidence of people suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

2002 — La Porte Hospital and Health Services continues expansion.
